As soon as you start TKD3 you will see two windows: the Control Panel and the Track Preview windows.

Control Panel window

The Control Panel is where you perform many actions on the track, including:

  • load, save or compile a track for VGP3
  • manage Materials through the Material editor
  • create/delete Segments
  • modify Segments and Stripes through the Segment editor
  • import A3e objects
  • manage Objects through the Object editor
  • modify track (fixed) cameras
  • open the Terrain editor
  • modify global track settings
  • modify track lighting
  • quit the application

Track Preview window

The Track Preview window is a real-time preview of your work, where you can modify the track with a point-and-click interface. It is, of course, empty at the start of the program (no track loaded). When you modify the track, the Track Preview window is updated in real-time to reflect changes.

Segments, Stripes and Objects are displayed using their visual informations. Segments and Stripes are always outlined in white, so that they are visible even if no Material is assigned to them; the currently selected Segment is outlined in red, the selected Stripe in yellow. Objects are marked with a O symbol, the currently selected Object is marked with a cross (X) symbol.

There are some useful keyboard shortcuts to control and navigate the Track Preview window:

Num Pad '2,4,6,8': scroll down, left, right and up the 3d view
'+', '-': zoom in and out
'*': show/hide terrain
'/': show/hide track (wireframe outline is always displayed)
'=': show/hide grid
m: enter “modify current segment” mode
o: enter “move current object” mode
t: enter “move segment camera” mode
SPACE BAR: exit any of the above modes
p: toggles between standard (top-down) and perspective view
ARROWS: (only in perspective mode) rotate view and change altitude
Num Pad '5': (only in perspective mode) move viewer to Segment camera

You can accomplish many operations directly in the Track Preview window by clicking/dragging the left or right mouse buttons.

The left mouse button is used to select/move track or objects; if you left click inside the Track Preview window with the mouse, the default action is to select the current Segment/Stripe and Object. Depending on the "modify mode" selected with the above keyboard shortcuts, keeping the left mouse button down drags around track, objects, cameras or bends the current Segment; in perspective view, shift-drag to move track or objects up and down.

The right mouse button is used to rotate/zoom (usually, only in perspective view); keeping the right mouse button down rotates track or objects, shift-drag up and down to zoom in and out.
